Abstract
Regular reflection from cadmium vapor in the neighborhood of the 2288 Å resonance line was investigated in the density range 5.9 ⋅ 1017 to 3.1 ⋅ 1019 cm−3. The proved independence of the maximum of spectral reflectance, (ρ r )max, on the density of atoms is due to line broadening mainly by resonance dipole-dipole interaction. This is why the measurement of (ρ r )max can be a sensitive instrument to check the accuracy of the various resonance broadening calculations. That formula for the resonance width derived by Margenau et Watson on the basis of the binary impact approximation was experimentally verified and was found to be not modified up to densities, where the statistical theory should be applied to the whole line shape.
