Abstract
We report on the first observation of magnetic dichroism in core level photoemission from a ferromagnet excited byunpolarized X-rays. With Mg Kα radiation, the peak-to-peak asymmetry for the Fe 3p core level is 4%. The asymmetry switches its sign when the analyzed spot is scanned over oppositely magnetized domains on the sample. This effect can be used for an element-specific imaging of magnetic domains in an ESCA photoemission microscope.
