Abstract
The electronic polarization of the oxygen ions provides a possible mechanism for pair formation in the highT c ceramic superconductors. I have performed detailed calculations of the effect, summing up the contribution of all polarized ions in the lattice to the interaction of two electrons or holes. SrTiO3 has been selected as the illustrating example despite a transition temperature of only 1.2 K because of its simple lattice structure and because most of the parameters needed for the calculations are known. One parameter of the model remains open and it is shown that for plausible values of it,p-type holes on neighbouring oxygen ions form bound pairs.
