Intermediate valency I: Couplings, Hamiltonian, and electrical resistivity

  • Published:
Zeitschrift für Physik B Condensed Matter

Abstract

A discussion is given of the couplings between the three sets of variables (conduction electrons,f-electrons, and lattice degrees of freedom) involved in intermediate valent behaviour and the resulting Hamiltonian is formulated. Emphasis is put on couplings between electronic and lattice variables, in particular on “spin”-flip terms resulting from spin orbit coupling. Concerning anomalies in the electrical resistivity, an explanation which doesnot rely on the Kondo effect is given.
