Abstract
Based on the vibronic theory, the optical properties of large-gap ferroelectrics are considered, using a simple model of vibronically renormalized electron bands. A generalized formula for the spontaneous birefringence is obtained, which describes also the unusual behaviour of Δn in PbTiO3. The dichroism of the interband absorption is calculated for BaTiO3. Basing on the formula for the current of the second order in the light-matter interaction the anomalous bulk photovoltaic effect is investigated in the same model. The general properties and trends found are in agreement with the observations. This effect is a natural nonlinear property of a ferroelectric related with the splitting-involving vibronic renormalization of its electron bands. The mechanism with the direct excitation of the active sublattice displacements by the light under simultaneous scattering between two bands is also considered.
