Abstract

Taking into account spin-orbit coupling in T-e and T-t2 systems allows us to explain the linear dependence of the distortion of the system on the strength of the external field (the dependence is linear for fields which are not too strong). An external trigonal field in the T-e system and a tetragonal field in the T-t2 system leads to the Jahn-Teller minima becoming more shallow and approaching closer to the origin of the coordinate system; i.e., the effect of the external fields in this case in analogous to the effect of spin-orbit coupling.
