Summary
The present paper describes the saponin distribution in etiolated leaf tissue of oat primary leaves and the subcellular localization of saponins in etiolated oat mesophyll protoplasts. Both avenacosides A and B are predominantely localized in the epidermis of etiolated leaves, in contrast to the epidermis of green leaves, which contains only avenacoside B. Therefore only 30% of the total leaf saponins are found in isolated etiolated mesophyll protoplasts. Evidence is presented that the oat saponins are localized inside the vacuole of etiolated protoplasts as it has already been shown for green protoplasts. Intact etioplasts and prolamellar bodies, isolated via protoplasts, contain only traces or no saponins, respectively.
