Summary

Kirschner was born in Breslau in 1879. In 1916 he was called to the chair of surgery in Kbnigsberg, in 1927 to Tdbingen and in 1934 to Heidelberg. In each of these cities he had new hospitals built. He was very successful in all fields of surgery. Among his most remarkable achievements were the first successful Trendelenburg's embolectomy, the one-stage resection of a lung lobe, a new method in oesophagus surgery, the introduction of the “Kirschner wire”, the use of Avertin-anaesthesia, spinal anaesthesia and electrocoagulation of the gasserian ganglion. 1932 he began the surgical teaching which was continued by Zenker.
