Summary

A model for the crossed-fibrillar structure of the outer epidermal wall ofHordeum vulgare L. is prosposed. It is consistent with primary differentiation and depends on helicoidal deposition of fibrils which are realigned in accordance with multi-net and ordered-fibril growth hypotheses.

The description of wall structure depends on the apparent shifts in fibrillar orientation following rotation of thin sections about defined axes. The wall structure is considered in developmental terms and modification following infection withErysiphe graminis D. C. provides additional information.
