Summary
A new, atmophytic species of the genusChroococcidiopsis in described. InChroococcidiopsis Kashaii endosporogenesis proceeds through an intermediary stage characterized by the appearance of walled secondary mother cells inside the membrane of the sporangium mother cell. Tertiary and more rarely quaternary mother cells may be formed, too. In culture, polarized club-shaped cells were observed. The three known species of the genusChroococcidiopsis are compared. Taxonomic and phylogenetic problems in the genus are discussed.
