Conclusions
A method is proposed for measuring the rate of solution of refractory material in slag, consisting of the determination of the linear dimensions and mass of the original material, and its mass residue not dissolved in the slag.
We determined the apparent density, porosity, compressive strength, thermal-shock resistance (by the crucible method), and the rate of solution in the slag of aluminosilicate compositions with additions of up to 30% silicon carbide.
The addition of silicon carbide leads to an increase in the solution intensity of the refractory in the slag and a reduction in its slag resistance in the lining of steel-casting ladles.
The results of the determination of the slag resistance of the refractory material may be a false representation of the reaction of steel-casting ladle refractories with the slag, and therefore in searching for new refractory compositions it is desirable to suppplement the crucible determinations of slag resistance with other methods, imitating, to a greater degree, the conditions of reaction of the refractory with the slag in the metallurgical equipment.
