Abstract

Low cost labor can represent an important factor for industrial location. In a survey conducted in a Brazilian industrial city it was found that the only explanation for the location of the textile activities was the presence of a large female labor force. That labor force was constituted by the dependents of the steel workers of the city and could be hired at bargain rates. A graphic analysis is developed to determine the supply curve of labor of the secondary labor market. The conditions according to which an industry attracted by cheap labor would tend to locate in a determined site is also examined diagrammatic ally by using the technique of critical isodapanes and substitution analysis.
