Refractories Aims and scope

Conclusions

In preparing kyanite-sillimanite concentrate for firing in rotary kilns it should be finely ground, and 20% kaolin should be added.

The addition of surface-active substances accelerates the process of grinding the concentrate. The use of sulfite lye and a combined addition (0.25% sulfite lye and 0.15% Na2O) during processing of the body increases the output of the press and extends the range of optimal moisture content.

For firing in a rotary kiln it is desirable to use pellets dried to 2% residual moisture content. This yields coarse-grained chamotte.

From the pellets prepared from 100% kyanite—sillimanite concentrate by semidry pressing on a hydraulic press, using plastic pressing (with an addition of kaolin) on a pugmill with a vacuum and without it, and also on press rollers after firing in a rotary kiln at 1630–1680°C it is possible to obtain chamotte with a water absorption of less than 3%.
