Abstract
This paper considers the current public debate over allocation of interior Alaskan forests. It focuses on the timber opportunity forgone if this land is placed in one of the restrictive use categories favored by conservationists. Our finding is that there is no net timber opportunity forgone, now or in the future, under single use timber management. Furthermore, it is unlikely that either the multiple use opportunity including timber or the timber-based regional development opportunity is favorable.
