Summary
Temporary coronary occlusions in animals have shown first signs of irreversible myocardial damage after 20 min and more extensive necrosis in the centre of the infarct after 40–60 min. In the pig myocardial contractility was partially restored after 1 1/2 h of coronary occlusion, while there was no return of active contractions after 3 h although paradoxical pulsation disappeared. These results are discussed in relation to the types of infarcts occurring in man and to possible forms of surgical intervention.
