Summary

In spite of many neurosurgical operations, performed during the Antiquity and Middle Ages, all essential postulates of modern neurosurgery have been developped during the last 100 years: diagnostic methods, operative technique and the knowledge and the treatment possibilities of postoperative disturbances.

The most important advances of the last decades are the micro -neurosurgery, the development of effectful treatment possibilities for bydrocephalus and the increase of the possibilities of stereotaxic neurosurgery, especially for psychiatric indications.
