The service conditions of feeder heads lined with refractory concrete

Refractories Aims and scope

Conclusions

The wear of the feeder head lining is the result of its surface layer softening and the synthetic slag reacting chemically with the refractory concrete. Wear is at maximum in the lower part of the lining up to one third of the height of the feeder head.

The greater part of the quantity of heat lost is accumulated in the lining so that the lining should be made of a light-weight refractory concrete and its exposed surface protected with a layer of a high-density, high-strength mix of good refractoriness. With light-weight refractory concretes the heat loss through the lateral surface is reduced so that the thermal regime of the ingot head is improved.
