Purification of the effluent of the refractories sector of lignosulfonates

Refractories Aims and scope

Conclusions

Lignosulfonates can be extracted from effluents by the introduction of calcium oxide and aluminum chloride into the effluent in the alkaline region of pH.

Optimal conditions for the extraction of the lignosulfonates are produced by the successive introduction into the effluent of calcium oxide in the proportion of 1∶1 (on the lignosulfonates content of the solution) and aluminum chloride in the proportion of 1∶2. The introduction of the calcium oxide causes the pH of the effluent to increase to 12.7 while the subsequent addition of the aluminum salts reduces it to 9.0.

Analyses have shown that the lignosulfonates are extracted from aqueous solutions as a result of their sorption on to the low-solubility hydroxides Al(OH)3 and Ca(OH)2.
