Olivinites from overburden of the Kovdorsk phlogopite deposits — A new source of raw materials for refractories production

Refractories Aims and scope

Conclusions

At the Kovdorsk massif in the region of the vermiculite-phlogopite deposits are to be found varieties of the purest olivinites, which are of interest as a raw material for refractories industry. They occupy an area of not less than 1 km2, and during the mining of the phlogopite are sent to the dump.

In chemical and mineral composition the Kovdorsk olivinites are close to dunites, used for the production of refractories. Laboratory investigation of the olivinites from the region of the phlogopite deposits showed that following high-temperature firing it is possible to obtain a material with a refractoriness of 1580–1660°C. Fusing the olivinites yields a forsterite material with a refractoriness of 1750°C.

As a result of the benefication of the olivinites it was possible to separate the impurity pyroxenes, carbonates, phlogopite, apatite and magnetite, and to obtain a concentrate with a refractoriness of 1730–1750°C containing 96.7% olivine.
