Summary
In freeze-etching at the inner nuclear membrane face of a metabolic very active granular pneumocyte complex structures were observed. These may be sites where DNA is attached to the nuclear membrane. Frequently network-like distribution of particles on the nuclear membranes occurs. A similar pattern was observed at membranes of mitochondria and especially of bacteria. In bacteria this network-like pattern was correlated with a mechanism of growth of the membrane.
In contrary to a requirement of the replicon model no zonal membrane growth seems to exist. Possible conclusions from the restricition of the network-like pattern to membranes of DNA-containing compartments are discussed.
