Summary
The unfavorable influence of raised temperature and larger amounts of manganese(IV)-oxide on the stability of acetate-buffered potassium permanganate solutions was confirmed.
The influence of the manganese(IV)-oxide precipitate on the decomposition of the permanganate was defined more precisely and thereby the assumption put into force that the blank value should be determined exactly in the indirect manganometric determinations of numerous organic materials. The total amount of permanganate decomposed is due in part to the elevated temperature and in part to the presence of manganese(IV)-oxide. The dependences described here of the influence of the temperature in all instances are ascribed either to the influence of the temperature or of the oxide at various temperatures upon the permanganate decomposition. In the indirect manganometric determinations of some organic materials in weakly acid surroundings, it is essential to take these facts into account and to take care that the amount of the resulting manganese(IV)-oxide precipitate must not exceed 30% of the initial permanganate amount.
