Summary
In order to establish approximate values for the solid fission products that would be expected to be formed during the operation of high temperaturereactors in the primary cycle, test burner elements were irradiated in a cylindrical capsule made of special steel. Following the disassembling, parts of the inclosing tube were cleaned off with acids in an apparatus devised for this purpose. In this way, the131I could be distilled over and the fission products detached in a single operation.
Through directed decontamination steps and selected precipitation- or extraction methods140Ba,90Sr,95Zr,137Cs, and144Ce were separated in the residual corrosion solution that contains an excess of activation products of the aluminium- and graphite contaminants, the steel components, soldering materials and thermoelement envelopes.
By employing a Ge(Li)-detector and a 4000-canal impulse high analyzer it was possible to determine various radionuclides in the presence of each other, so that the chemical method of separation could be simplified through the saving of decontamination processes, and the activation products46Sc,51Cr,54Mn,58Co,59Fe,65Zn,110mAg, and182Ta could be identified. The determination of90Sr was accomplished via its daughter90Y following removal of89Y by liquid scintillation.
