Summary
The chorioallantoic membranes and embryos of developing hen's eggs infected with a strain variant canary pox virus were examined histologically in an effort to determine the cause of death of the embryo. The presence of a markedly thickened chorioallantois, in which the ectoderm and mesoderm are principally involved, and the conspicuous simultaneous absence of specific embryo degenerative or hyperplastic changes suggest that the embryo dies of hypoxia resulting from impaired oxygen diffusion through the thickened membrane. The evidence supporting this hypothesis is discussed.
