Summary
Whilst tourism is widely promoted as an instrument of economic development, it may also give rise to adverse social and environmental impacts in the host community. Recent commercial tourist development in the Patara Valley, Turkey, is examined in terms of facility provision, beneficial and adverse impacts, and tourists' reactions. It is concluded that, unless specific corrective measures are taken, the future development of the industry may be unsustainable.
