Abstract

This study compares the data obtained from two retrospective surveys: the Senegal Fertility Survey (SFS) and the Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) with the data obtained from a longitudinal follow-up study held among the Sereer, living in a rural area of Senegal (Niakhar). The study shows that the fertility level is slightly higher in the retrospective surveys than in the longitudinal follow-up, the difference being mainly due to an overestimation of the fertility rate of the age group 15–19 years. The mortality levels and trends among under five children are correctly estimated by the DHS, but are underestimated by the SFS. The age pattern of mortality is slightly biased in the DHS and SFS, owing to errors on age at the time of death in these retrospective surveys. The comparison of the nutritional status was difficult to make because of the small sample size used in the DHS.

Résumé

Cette étude compare les données de deux enquêtes rétrospectives : l'Enquête Sénégalaise sur la Fécondité (ESF) et l'Enquête sur la Démographique et de Santé (EDS), avec les données obtenues à l'aide d'un suivi longitudinal des Sereer vivant dans une zone rurale de Sénégal (Niakhar). L'étude montre que la fécondité se situe à un niveau un peu plus élevé que dans le suivi longitudinal, la différence étant essentiellement due à une surestimation du taux de fécondité des 15–19 ans. Les niveaux de mortalité et leurs tendances pour les enfants de moins de cinq ans sont correctement estimés par l'enquête EDS, mais sont sous-estimés par l'enquête ESF. La mortalité par âge est légèrement biaisée dans les deux enquêtes EDS et ESF, du fait d'erreurs sur l'âge au décès donné dans les enquêtes rétrospectives. La comparaison de l'état nutritionnel était difficile à réaliser du fait de la faiblesse de la taille de l'échantillon de l'enquête EDS.
