Parvoviruses as contaminants of permanent human cell lines III. Biological properties of the isolated viruses

Summary

  1. 1.

For three reference strains (KBSH, TVX, Lu III) of the parvoviruses isolated from human permanent cell lines the biological features were investigated and compared with those of other parvovirus strains (H-1, H-3, KRV, X 14, MVM).

  2. 2.

The hemagglutination patterns of all virus strains were found similar when tested with RBC's of human, guinea pig, rat, hamster, and mouse origin. By including additional red cell types it proved possible to distinguish between virus strains exhibiting either a narrow (KBSH, PPV, MVM) or a broad (TVX, Lu III, H-1, H-3, KRV, X 14) hemagglutination spectrum.

  3. 3.

In tissue cultures the virus strains could be divided, according to their affinity to human and rodent cells, into 3 groups. Reference strains KBSH, TVX and Lu III multiplied in human but not in rodent cells. Strains H-1 and H-3 propagated equally well in cell cultures of either human or rodent origin, whereas strains KRV, RTV, X 14 and MVM grew exclusively in cell cultures of rodents.

All reference strains exhibited a very strict virus/cell association and showed, like all other parvoviruses, a high selective affinity for actively dividing cells.

  4. 4.

So far, reference strains KBSH and TVX proved to be apathogenic for newborn mice or hamsters.
