Summary
A survey of the literature on the development of gas chromatography is given up to 1955. A report is also included on the theoretical, practical and methodical results in this field in Czechoslovakia.
A gas chromatograph is described with which it is possible to make qualitative and quantitative microanalyses of gases by means of direct measurement of the volume of single components of the gas mixture. The instrument is provided with automatic registration. The concept of chromatographic gas spectrum is formulated and characteristic magnitudes are defined. This makes possible the determination of the succession of individual gases in the development of the chromatogram, the prediction of the possibility of the separation, the calculation of the columns for the separation of the gas mixture as well as the identification of the unknown components. Furthermore, a discussion is given of newly discovered relations between the molecular structure of gases and their position in the chromatographic spectrum.
The method offers new possibilities of separating and analysing (0,1 to 2 ml) of gases which are quite similar chemically and physically, since in this manner for the first time a whole series of gases was successfully separated. New analytical methods are developed, which deal with the separation and analysis of the permanent gases, gaseous paraffins, cycloparaffins, nitrogen oxides, sulfur compounds, halogens, olefines, acetylenes, noble gases, and chlorinated, brominated and fluorinated hydrocarbon's (Freons). The use of absorption for concentration and determination of traces is also shown, as for instance, individual higher gaseous paraffins (10−4 vol %), helium and neon (10−4 vol %), hydrogen (10−3 vol %), olefines (10−4 vol %), etc. Mention is also made of the application of gas chromatography for measuring the sorption-activity of surface active materials (catalysts).
