Summary
When a very small current is passed between two electrodes immersed in a titration solution, the potential set up between them shows a sharp and pronounced break at the endpoint of the reaction. Since these electrodes may be made extremely small, and may be incorporated in a platform which supports the titration liquid, the method may very conveniently be applied to the ultra-micro scale. With the oxidant in the burette, three types of redox reaction are distinguished, in which (a) both oxidant and reductant are reversibly electrolysed, when the endpoint is a sharp peak, (b) the oxidant only is reversibly electrolysed, when the potential drops suddenly to zero from a high value, and (c) the reductant only is reversibly electrolysed, when the potential suddenly rises from zero to a high value. Results are presented which show that the accuracy, in titrations of the order of 0.5μl is equal to that on the macro scale, while quantities as small as 0.0006 microequivalent can be titrated to an accuracy of 1%.
-
a)
