Summary
A general review of a sunflower breeding programm was given, and all aspects of culture and improvement discussed.
It was shown that the pH of the soil has an important role on the development of the broom rape disease(Orobanche cannis).
Special attention should be paid to plants producing white (colourless) pollen, as these plants have a very uniform and well developed head (receptacle). Armoured coat seeds are immune toward sunflower moth, this characteristic being dominant over susceptibility, it should be taken in consideration when selection is done.
A shortening of internods (reduced height of stalks) is of great importance for harvesting, but the total number of leaves has to remain stable, otherwise the yield decreases.
Non-branching is hereditary, but can also be influenced by environmentel factors. A cross between the annual and perennial sunflower mostly gives a sterile hybrid, but in those being fertile, the fertility increases with each succeeding generation. A low germination percentage after such a cross can be overcome by a treatment with a 0,2% H2O2 concentration.
Crosses tried betweenHelianthus annuus × Helianthus tuberosus, improved the quality of the latter. By backcrossing to sunflowers some perennial plants can be obtained, being immune to diseases.
Before a cross betweenH. annuus × Carthamus tinctorius (Safflower) can be made, the sunflower has to be grafted on the safflower. The F2 of the cross has then to be backcrossed.
The main characters of such progenies, are drought and disease resistance.
High oil content is a dominant character, but the amount of oil in the harvested seeds depends mainly from the amount of precipitation.
