Summary

  1. 1.

    Misdivision of the centromere and terminal and intercalary unions of chromatids occur spontaneously at meiosis in a plant ofGasteria undulata.

  2. 2.

    Both these errors are confined to long chromosomes and the chromatid errors to the long arms of long chromosomes.

  3. 3.

    Thus the centromere interferes with the chromatid errors. Yet this and previous accounts indicate that centric errors and chromatid errors are basically connected.

  4. 4.

    The misdivision gives new isochromosomes at meiosis and new telocentric fragments which act as complementary chromosomes at the pollen grain mitosis and can thus change the basic number.
