Summary
A method is described for determining by a manometric process the content of carbon, hydrogen, and nitrogen in organic compounds. Only one sample is needed. The sample, mixed with copper oxide, is burned in a closed system, evacuated to at least 10−2 mm Hg, the resulting carbon dioxide and water are fractionally frozen out and the nitrogen pressure is then determined. After the nitrogen is pumped off, the pressure of the carbon dioxide is measured, and then the pressure of the water vapor. These data suffice to give the respective percentages or the atomic ratios of C, H, and N, on the basis of an empirical calibration of the apparatus.
