Summary

  1. 1.

The general submicroscopic organization of theOenothera-chloroplast is presented and compared with the corresponding structures of other angiosperm genera. Besides quantitative differences in the size of the grana and the number of lamellae, the chloroplasts ofAspidistra, Hordeum andOenothera differ in the mutual arrangement of stroma and grana layers.

  2. 2.

A yellow-green mutant of thesuaveolens-plastidom shows in young leaves normally developed plastids with a well differentiated stroma and grana structure. In older leaves the plastids are destroyed owing to a spontaneous swelling and a “hypertrophy” of the granular substance. The grana lamellae are highly resistant against the vacuolization. A white mutant seems to behave in a similar way.

  3. 3.

The results are briefly discussed in relation to chloroplast destruction caused by gene-mutation in barley.
