Differential sensitivity of virulent and attenuated strains of type 1 poliovirus to polyethylene glycol as a possible new genetic marker

Summary

The effect of polyethylene glycol (PG) on poliovirus type 1 was studied by testing virulent (Mahoney) and attenuated (LSc2ab) virus strains as well as 20 isolates obtained from patients and vaccinees. PG was added in 2 per cent concentration to the agar overlay. Strains showing 20–50-fold inhibition of plaque formation were designated as PG-negative and those showing no inhibition as PG-positive. The virulent strains were found to be PG+, attenuated strains PG-. Among virus isolates from the intestinal tract at various intervals after vaccination the PG character was found to be more stable than the intratypic antigenic (Ag) or Chromatographic (E) markers.
