Summary
Diploid regenerates ofCallithamnion roseum were grown in bacterized, enriched sea water media. Their development from single cells or cell filaments was followed by photomicrography and microcinematography. The apical growth pattern of the regenerates consists of a recurring alternation of oblique unequal apical divisions and subsequent segment cell elongations, with the formation of protrusions which gradually develop into branches. The regular alternation of oblique mitotic spindles as an underlying factor of basic cell structure is discussed. A definite correlation was found between the formation of oblique crosswalls and branching.
