Summary
The surface epithelium of the slugArion rufus L. is surveyed. The ciliated epithelium and the striated epithelium, which covers the greater part of the surface, are described. In certain areas of the epithelium there is secretion by means of vesicles. During this process the microvilli disappear. The cells are first transformed to a “Zinnenepithel” (crenellated epithelium), which there upon ties off small lumps from its surface.
Adjacing epithelial elements of the skin show different intercellular communications. Zonula adhaerens, an interzone, and a Zonula septata form the junctional complex of the epithelia. The Maculae occludentes are located on the lateral cell surface. Furthermore the cells are in communication by idention and by means of cell-bridges which cross the intercellular spaces.
