Summary
Acute traumatic and toxic injuries to the central nervous system in brain and spinal cord may lead to serious diseases of the viscera.
By means of experiments on animals it can be proved that the pulmonary functions may be influenced from the brain and the spinal cord (above all over the paths of the pulmonary vasomotor nerves). Analogies with the experiments on animals are in human pathology: pulmonary bleeding and centrogenic pulmonary oedema after serious cerebral traumas, operations on the brain, poisoning by barbiturates and meningo-encephalitis, furthermore, acute asthmatic fits as an epileptic equivalent after cerebral trauma and encephalitis, hyperaemic atelectases as viscero-visceral reflexes after spinal commotion, pancreatitis, cholecystitis, perforation due to stomach ulcer, etc.
Also the autonomy of the action of the heart can be cerebrally influenced. This can be proved by alterations in the electrocardiogram after encephalography, by electro-, cardiazol- and insuline-shocks, by the observation of paroxysmal tachycardias and paroxysmal perpetual arhythmia in cases of epilepsy proceeding from the temporal lobes, by viscero-visceral reflex coronary blood circulation troubles leading to myocardial infarction. Stomach ulcerations, troubles of the tonicity of stomach and intestines, particularly of an atonic nature, occur after operations on the brain, cerebral traumas, extended burning of the skin and poisoning by war gas, furthermore, after vertebral fracture and haematomyelia within the zone of the middle part of the dorsal vertebral column.
The inner secretion, too, is subject to cerebral impulses. This can be demonstrated by means of the stress-effect on the hypophyseal adrenal system, by Basedow's disease from fright, by chronic traumatic encephalopathias with a secondary myxoedema and by diabetes proceeding from mortal anxiety. Again numerous experiments on animals are well in accordance with the clinical observations.
Only the consideration of the visceral function troubles and of the visceral diseases proceeding therefrom, which are released and caused by cerebral and spinal traumas, readers the possibility to aid sufficiently, by medial treatment and by expert evidence, patients suffering from injuries to the brain and the spinal cord.
