Summary
Attachment and entry of influenza A/Hong-Kong/1/68 (H3-N2) virus into the host cells of the bronchi and alveoli of the Balb/c mouse were followed during 37 minutes with the aid of electron microscope. Virus particles attached early to the microvilli and cilia of ciliated cells and to the mucus-secreting cells in the bronchi, and to the type II alveolar cells and the epithelial lining in the corners of the alveoli. Entry of virus occurred somewhat later, particularly into the mucus secreting cells and the type II pneumocytes, by means of single virus capturing microvesicles or of wider granular phagocytic vacuoles which contained clusters of viral particles. Viral particles seemed to undergo, in both types of vesicles, modifications which concerned particularly their envelope.
