Summary
This study suggests that fluorescent microscopy may be feasible for the “bedside” diagnosis of respiratory diseases caused by adenoviruses and mycoplasma. Using throat washings or nasopharyngeal scrapings with serologic tests for confirmation, it was determined that approximately 50% of the adenovirus and 73% of the mycoplasma infections could be rapidly detected on a routine basis. It is assumed that a greater correlation could be obtained with the institution of better patient specimen collection.
