Summary

Monkey kidney cell suspensions were frozen and stored at low temperature for as long as 8 months. Cells were frozen as fresh trypsinized cells and after a primary culturein vitro. Cells recovered after freezing were cultured as primary and secondary cultures to check for spontaneous contaminants. Cell-freezing process showed to delay the appearance of spontaneous lesions caused by adventitious agents in monkey kidney cells. This delay was less important if frozen cells were stored at low temperature for as long as 8 months. Cell-freezing showed to be a good method for finding the presence of spontaneous contaminants in the eultured cells and may help to select monkey kidney cell suspensions in vaccine production or any other experimental works.
