Studies with a rhinovirus of bovine origin

II. Some physical and chemical properties of strain RS 3x

Archiv für die gesamte Virusforschung Aims and scope Submit manuscript

Summary

A bovine rhinovirus (strain RS 3x) was fo und to be most stable at pH 7.0, but was rapidly inactivated at pH 5 and pH 10.5. The virus was approximately 25 nm in diameter by filtration, and possessed a hydrated density of approximately 1.40 g/ml in caesium chloride. Replication was not inhibited by the presence of 5-iodo-2′-deoxyuridine.

The virus was rapidly inactivated by trypsin and sodium dodecyl sulphate but was unaffected by chloroform or sodium desoxycholate. Infectivity was rapidly lost at 37δC, and very rapidly at 50°C, at which temperature no stabilisation occurred in the presence of molar magnesium chloride.
