Summary
In tissue cultures, presence of mycoplasmas may cause alterations of cell growth, cytopathic effects of varying degrees, and heavy changes in cellular physiology, especially in respect to nucleic acid metabolism. Thus, the use of contaminated cultures for virological diagnostic procedures results in a broad and inpredictable variation of virus multiplication but due to the presence of the mycoplasma antigen, main disadvantages are to be expected during serological-virological examinations. Furthermore, owing to the more or less distinct cytopathogenic activity and other properties of the mycoplasmas, there is the danger of taking them as viruses in culture tests.
