Cytopathology of vesicular stomatitis virus with phase microscopy

  • Published:

Summary

The sequence of early cytopathic changes produced by vesicular stomatitis virus in fibroblastic or epithelial cell types were studied by phase contrast microscopy. The final stage of cytopathology, which was rounding of cells, was similar in both cell types. However, early changes peculiar to each of the cells were observed. For the fibroblastic cells it was pseudopodal budding of the cell membrane, while the epithelial cells showed cytoplasmic vacuolation. In both cell types there was apparent arrest of cell division at late telophase.
