Summary

The imidazole derivatives BC 16, 59, 60, and 63 which had been selected by a screening program because of their particularly antiviral activity against mengo-virus, were also shown to be effective against a number of enteroviruses. Their sensitivity was found decreasing in the order ECHO virus types 11, 30 and 33, poliovirus type 2, live polio vaccine strains types 2 and 3, Coxsackie virus B 2 and B 4, poliovirus types 1 and 3, the polio vaccine strain 1, and Coxsackie virus B 1, B 3 and B 5. There was no evidence for activity against sheep abortion, vaccinia, pseudorabies, sindbis, Newcastle disease and fowl plague virus. The inhibitory spectrum of the imidazoles under question resembles that of benzimidazole derivatives. With respect to the virological results obtained as yet the imidazoles are considered of being selective inhibitors of picornaviruses.
