Summary
Two viruses isolated from sheep faeces have been identified as reoviruses on the basis of their morphology and physical and chemical properties. The agents agglutinated human and bovine erythrocytes and antiserum to a prototype strain of reovirus type 3 (but not to types 1 and 2) inhibited this reaction. It is concluded that both agents were type 3 reoviruses. A survey of reovirus antibody in sheep sera showed that antibody to type 3 reovirus was present in 46 per cent of sera tested, but no antibody was detected to the other two types. There was no evidence that the agents isolated caused any clinical disease in sheep. The differentiation of these isolates from bluetongue virus is discussed.
