Summary
Prototype adenoviruses and their haemagglutinins ofRosen's, group I (types agglutinating monkey red blood cells) were studied by adsorption to blood cells and by straight and caesium chloride density gradient centrifugation. Types 11, 16, 21, and 3 exhibited a haemagglutinin associated with the infectious virus particles and another one separable from the virus. Types 7 and 14 exhibited a “soluble” haemagglutinin only. The haemagglutinins of these two virus types were inactivated by trypsin and haemagglutination was inhibited by caesium chloride. There was a marked difference in host range of monkey blood cells agglutinable by types 11, 16, 21. types 3 and 7, or type 14 respectively.
