Summary
Virus-like particles have been found in the central nervous system of normally appearing imagos (workers) of the common wood ant (Formica lugubris Zett.) Two types of particles could be identified in the cytoplasm of nervous, glial and fat body cells with the aid of an electronmicroscope: The first type has a hexagonal profile and a size of 120–150 mμ in diameter; the second type is spherical and 60–70 mμ. in diameter. While the former occurred in all specimens in solitary form and small number, the latter was found only in one specimen but in extensive cristalloid aggregates. Both types of particles may occur simultaneously in the cytoplasm of the same cell and even in combination with a rickettsia or mycoplasma-like microorganism. The first type is morphologically similar to iridescent virus, while the second type could not yet be related to any known form. The significance of these particles for the host organism and their distribution in other animals and in plants is unknown.
