Summary
In Cynomolgus monkeys poliomyelitis-like lesions in the spinal cord, myocarditis and myositis were regularly produced by intramuscular inoculation of viruses of the Columbia SK-MM-EMC group. Various rodent-nonpathogenic strains of human poliomyelitis virus, following intra-muscular inoculation, proved also capable to produce heart and skeletal muscle lesions, which were, however, discrete and transient if paralysis did not develop. The development of paralysis following intramuscular inoculation of human poliomyelitis virus was greatly facilitated by inoculating the virus together with hyaluronidase. The lesions in the skeletal muscles appeared early in the preparalytic stage, and were still demonstrable in the paralytic stage. Columbia SK virus could be recovered from the infected muscle and the blood of inoculated monkeys for at least 4 days following intramuscular inoculation. Human poliomyelitis virus, however, could not be shown in the blood, the heart and skeletal muscle.
