Summary
Nine cynomolgus monkeys were inoculated intravascularly with Group B, type 4 (Edwards strain) Coxsackie virus. Viremia developed in 6 monkeys by the 2nd day, but was not detected thereafter. B4 virus was recovered in CSF obtained from 2 monkeys. The specific antibody responses were equivocal for 8 monkeys; all showed a slight rise in antibody levels; only one monkey surviving 28 days had an unequivocal antibody response.
Large concentrations of B4 virus were often recovered from heart (6 monkeys) and CNS (5 monkeys). Lesions attributable to viral injury were found in heart muscle (8 of 9 monkeys) and in CNS tissues (6 of 9 monkeys). Three monkeys with unclassified weakness of limb muscles had both lesions and detectable amounts of virus in the CNS. The morphological characters of the lesions in the heart and in the CNS are described.
