Summary
Pulmonary function studies and blood gas analyses under air and oxygen breathing were performed in 56 patients before upper abdominal laparotomies as well as on the 2nd and 7th postoperative days.
Patients were grouped according to sex, postoperative pulmonary complications and type of abdominal incisions.
The most striking results were a postoperative restrictive respiratory disturbance of considerable extent combined with a decrease of arterial pO2. However, there was no significant ostructive respiratory disturbance present. The cause of the respiratory disturbance is discussed in detail.
Pulmonary complications as manifested on x-ray on the 3rd postoperative day were found to be equally frequent in male and female patients, their frequency being higher in gastric resections than in biliary tract operations.
The type of upper abdominal incision did not influence the extent of postoperative pulmonary complications.
