Summary
An Engineering Approach to Evaluate the Strength and Deformability of Regularly Jointed Rock Systems
Based on biaxial compression tests of regularly jointed rock systems an approach is derived, using conventional methods of engineering analysis, to numerically evaluate strength and deformability of jointed rock. System/element coefficients are used to relate strength and deformability of the rock system with the respective parameters of the rock elements.
The strength of jointed rock systems is determined using the Mohr-Coulomb-concept. A distinction is made between three models of failure: sliding along joints, new shear failure, and new shear failure affected by joints. The deformability of jointed systems due to sliding along joints, also prior to the actual failure, is numerically evaluated based upon the Mohr-Coulomb-concept, the results of shear tests on joints, and geometric considerations. The deformation parameters obtained are related to those of the elements to find the parameters describing the deformability of the entire rock system. These values can also be given in terms of system/element coefficients.
